Your wedding day should represent the unique love and connection that you share with your partner. Use these ideas to dare to be different and highlight your individuality as a couple, creating a memorable wedding day for you and your guests.

1. Have a theme wedding that demonstrates who you are as a couple. You might be inspired by ecologically friendly decorations and have a green wedding, complete with recycled and eclectic centerpieces to pots of flowers or small trees which guests can take home and plant instead of cut flowers. Perhaps you want to share your love for everything horseback riding by throwing an old fashioned barn wedding. Theme weddings can tell your guests more about your personal stories and help you and your partner stay true to who you are. Vintage themed weddings are very popular at the moment.

2. Surprise guests, either with the location or by the wedding entirely. For smaller weddings in more intimate settings you can provide transportation for guests to your special location, only informing them of attire needs and length of stay. This could range from asking them to pack sandals and taking them to a nearby beach or asking them to pack an overnight bag and whisking everyone away for the night. Some couples are even surprising guests entirely by masquerading the ceremony as a birthday party or other celebration, only to break out the wedding bands and officiant instead.

3. Instead of gifts, encourage your wedding guests to donate to a treasured charity or cause that is near and dear to your hearts. This is especially popular for couples who have already established their households or who are marrying later in life. Indicate your wishes on the invitation so guests can plan accordingly, and include a small card they can bring to the wedding listing their anonymous contribution. All of the cards with contributions can be displayed for guests to see during the reception, sharing the combined efforts of the guests to make a difference in honor of the couple. If you have a specific charity to which you request gifts made, provide information in both the invitation and at the ceremony about the organization and why it is an integral part of your lives.

4. Let your bridesmaids choose their own dresses and present each one with a special accessory, such as a pendant or earrings. You can give them a color scheme to work with, allowing them all to find a style that is comfortable for them and yet complimentary to your overall wedding look. Some dress designers establish lines of dresses of similar fabrics and colors, just in varieties of styles, which can be perfect for individualized style needs and wants.

5. Incorporate several transitional activities for guests and the wedding party. You can begin the day with breakfast for everyone and the opportunity to come together as one before the ceremony. If your ceremony is later in the day, arranging for fun group activities like bowling, golfing, or an outing at the spa.

6. Don’t let the end of the evening mean the end of your magnificent celebration. Plan an after party that will let your special day turn into a special weekend. You could switch venues or just switch gears and move from a traditional wedding band to a karaoke contest like no other. Plan to serve a very early morning breakfast for those who stay, or perhaps hire a local coffee company to bring in the equivalent to an office coffee cart, complete with morning brew and donuts.

7. Surprise your spouse with a special toast or gift at the reception. This could be as simple as toasting your new spouse and telling how crazy in love you are or giving him a new watch because you can’t imagine a time without him. While you and everyone else might be anticipating several toasts to good fortune by the bridal party, don’t forget to toast your guests and thank them for sharing in your special day.

8. Consider the needs of guests with children, whether or not kids are included in the actual invitation list. If you are planning an adults only evening, clearly state that politely on the invitation so there are no questions as to the arrangements that will need to be made. You can offer childcare services on site for families, including a movie room for older kids to have their own party, complete with kid friendly food and mini cakes. If kids are invited to the wedding, arrange for appropriate seating and dining for them. You could even have a table just for kids at the reception where they can color pictures to be included in your wedding album.

9. When the wedding is over, don’t just send traditional thank you notes to guests. Assemble and provide digital copies of thanks, including pictures from the day. You can burn these on CDs and send each one to guests who you know are computer savvy enough to use them. Providing these lasting memories for your guests is just another way to make your wedding different and an event cherished by all.
